Since 1977, Matanzas Creek Winery has been focused on creating balanced, elegant wines regarded as Sonoma County classics. As we continue to explore the nuances of Bennett Valley, we have discovered parcels with outstanding potential for Pinot Noir and are delighted to present our first vintage of this varietal in over 25 years.
Tasting Notes
On appearance, the 2006 is a vibrant cardinal red. The first nose delivers perfumed aromas of juicy red raspberry and the faint scent of cherry seeds. After a swirl, the rich scent of evening rose, black currant and a touch of sun-warmed anise are unveiled. On the palate, this wine is complex and intense with deep red fruits and soft tannins that drift into a long, mineral finish.
The wine’s structure will allow for it to be reserved for the next three to five years. With time, this Pinot Noir will become more velvety and sophisticated and minerality will become more pronounced.
Source
The vineyards surrounding Matanzas Creek are cool climate – Region II on the UC Davis scale – similar to the Russian River Valley and much cooler than the neighboring Sonoma Valley. The marine influence known as the ‘Petaluma Wind Gap’ promotes low diurnal temperatures and balanced growing conditions for Pinot Noir. From its ancient volcanic past, Bennett Valley soil is predominately basalt, which imparts mineral and smoke characteristics to our wines.
